Frequently Asked Questions

Values on this page use silver spot at $59.76/oz · updated

Short answers to the questions people ask most about the silver price. Each answer links to the page that covers it in full. Every price on this site shows the time it was read and the source it came from.

Reading the price

What is the current silver price per ounce?

One troy ounce of silver is $59.76 as of October 7, 2026, read from a public spot feed. The number is rebuilt into this site every six hours and re-read in your browser about once a minute while the tab is open. The homepage shows the current silver price per ounce with its chart and timestamp.

What does "spot price" mean?

The CFTC defines spot as the cash price for immediate delivery of physical metal, quoted per troy ounce. In practice it is a reference price for pure silver in bulk, not what a coin shop charges. Our page on silver spot price vs. retail price explains the gap between the two.

Why do two sites show slightly different prices?

Feeds differ in timing, in whether they show the bid or the ask, and in whether they quote spot or a futures contract. A difference of a few cents or even a dollar can be ordinary. We state our source and time on every page so you can compare like with like, and the silver price history page says which series each chart uses.

How often does this site update?

The pages are rebuilt every six hours, and the headline number is refreshed in your browser about every minute while the page is visible. If the refresh fails, the page keeps the last value it was built with, and the timestamp beside it tells you how old that value is. Details are on the about page.

Is the chart a futures price or a spot price?

The big number is spot. The charts draw from COMEX futures history for silver, because that is the daily record available without a license, and each chart is labeled that way. The two measure slightly different things, so any page that sets one against the other compares the same series on both sides.

Units and purity

How many grams are in a troy ounce?

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price per gram is the ounce price divided by that number. At today's spot, silver is $1.92 per gram. The silver price per gram page shows the worked division and a table from one gram up to five hundred.

What is the price of silver per kilo?

At today's spot a kilogram of pure silver is $1,921.33, because a kilogram holds about 32.1507 troy ounces. That is the melt value of the metal, not the price of a kilo bar from a dealer. The silver price per kilo page covers bar sizes and the arithmetic.

Is a troy ounce the same as the ounce on a kitchen scale?

No. The ounce used for food is about 8.9% lighter than a troy ounce, so weighing silver on a kitchen scale and pricing it per ounce overstates its value. Our guide to troy ounce vs. ounce works through an example with real numbers.

What is sterling silver worth per gram?

Sterling is .925 pure, so a gram of it holds $1.78 worth of silver at today's spot, before any dealer or refiner deducts costs. Use the silver melt value calculator to enter a weight and a purity and see the melt value, with a static table beside it.

What does .999 mean on a bar or coin?

It is the fineness: 999 parts per thousand are silver, or 99.9% pure. Other common marks include .958, .925 for sterling, .900 for older coin silver and .800. The purity table on the melt calculator page shows the value of a gram at each fineness, using today's live spot price.

What you pay

How much is 1 oz of silver worth?

At today's spot, one troy ounce is $59.76. What you pay to buy a round, bar or coin is higher, and what a buyer pays you is usually lower. Our page on how much 1 oz of silver is worth separates those three meanings.

Why does silver cost more than the spot price when I buy it?

The difference is the premium, which pays for making the item, moving it, holding stock and the seller's margin. It changes with the product and the market. The CFTC advises asking for every fee in writing and comparing the total with spot times weight. See silver spot price vs. retail price.

Is a Silver Eagle worth more than its silver?

Its melt value is about one troy ounce at spot, $59.76 today. Buyers usually pay more, because the coin is legal tender and carries minting and distribution costs. The silver Eagle price page explains where the premium comes from, without quoting dealer prices.

What will a buyer pay for silver I already own?

Usually less than melt value, because a buyer has to cover costs and a margin. Treat any calculator figure as a ceiling, not an offer. Ask for a written quote and compare it across buyers. The silver melt value calculator shows the ceiling for your weight and purity.

Where can I buy silver?

From a dealer, a mint's authorized sellers or a company that delivers physical metal. Compare written quotes on the same terms. Our guide to where to buy silver lays out the questions to ask and describes Augusta Precious Metals, the one company we feature, including who it does and does not suit.

The market

What is the gold-silver ratio today?

It is 68.7 to 1: one ounce of gold, at $4,103.50, buys that many ounces of silver at $59.76. The ratio moves whenever either price moves. The gold-silver ratio page has the chart, the ten-year range and what a high or low reading does and does not tell you.

Why is silver price going up or down?

Silver is both an industrial metal and something people hold for value, so it reacts to both stories: factory demand, interest rates, the dollar, supply and buying by holders. Our page on why is silver price going up sets these out in a table, with a source for each cause.

What is silver's all-time high?

As of October 7, 2026, silver futures sit 47.9% below the record close of $115.08, set on January 26, 2026. The record close in our series is $115.08 on January 26, 2026. The silver price all-time high page explains how we keep the record and why we compare the same series on both sides.

Where can I see the silver price history?

The silver price history page has a ten-year chart with range tabs and a year-by-year table of open, high, low, close and change. It also states how fine each range is, since the longest range uses month-end closes, which hides the extremes inside each month.

Will silver go up next year?

Nobody can say, and we publish no forecast of our own. What we can do is list what banks and analysts have published, with their dates, so you can see how targets have changed. That is on the silver price forecast page. It is information, not advice.
